Leaders of the Greater Vancouver Taiwanese Community met yesterday evening (August 11) to officially form the "Greater Vancouver Taiwanese Community Typhoon Morakot Relief Committee", as a response to the tragic events that took place in Taiwan as a result of the Typhoon Morakot. Executive committee was also formed, with Christina Chang of the Taiwan Chamber of Commerce in BC as the Chair of the Committee, Yu Wen Chen of Taiwanese Canadian Association of Canada as the Secretary General, Ruth Cheuh of the Vancouver Taiwan Presbyterian Church as the Treasurer, Jason Wang of the Taiwanese Canadian Cultural Society as Director of Media and Publications and Kevin Chen of Vancouver Taiwanan_678 Generation as the Events Director. Also at the meeting were about 20 leaders of the Vancouver Taiwanese community. Due to the time constraint, some organization representatives were unable to attend, but it is believed more will join the Committee in the days to come.
Typhoon Morakot struck on August 8 and devastated Southern Taiwan, causing floods and mud slides, including the near complete burial of Hsiaolin Village. Over 60 are confirmed dead, and the death toll is expected to continue to rise. It is estimated that the total damage may exceed that of the Earth Quake of September 21, 1999.
The Taiwanese community in Greater Vancouver has very close ties with Taiwan, and is tremendously concerned with the welfare of the victims of this disastrous calamity. The Committee is calling on all members of the community to disregard all political, religious or cultural differences, be they, and join together in this relief effort.
